Through this procedure, Dr. Keyes makes subtle changes to the size and/or shape of the nose in order to create dramatic results that improve the overall appearance of the nose and face. Dr. Keyes has a very positive reputation among patients because he works with patients’ individual needs and desires rather than creating a “cookie cutter” nose for everyone. When patients do come to Dr. Keyes to learn about rhinoplasty surgery, a common concern is the amount of pain that will be experienced as a result of the procedure. For most of our Los Angeles patients, rhinoplasty pain is less severe than they had anticipated. Prior to surgery, Dr. Keyes offers each of his patients useful tips for reducing whatever pain is present during recovery.

Reducing Rhinoplasty Pain

Dr. Keyes is very careful in the work he performs and does his best to ensure that each patient has a smooth recovery with minimal pain. While post-surgical pain is often not as severe as patients fear, there will be some discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery. The most significant pain is likely to be experienced during the first few days after surgery but some degree of discomfort may remain throughout the first week or two of recovery.  The following steps can be taken by patients in order to reduce rhinoplasty pain during recovery:

  • Use pain medication: Dr. Keyes will prescribe pain medication that can be used as directed to reduce the pain of rhinoplasty surgery. As pain becomes less severe, patients can use over-the-counter pain medication as necessary to manage discomfort.
  • Apply cold compresses: The application of cold compresses can be useful in reducing swelling as well as reducing pain and discomfort during recovery.
  • Keep the head elevated: Swelling can put pressure on the nose and contribute to pain after rhinoplasty. Keeping the head elevated while resting can reduce swelling; therefore reducing pressure and decreasing discomfort.
  • Avoid putting pressure on the nose: Any pressure on the nose should be avoided during recovery in order to reduce pain following rhinoplasty surgery. Simple activities such as blowing the nose and wearing eyeglasses can put pressure on the nose and cause pain or discomfort.
  • Use nasal spray: It is common for the nose to feel dry and stuffed up beginning two to three days after rhinoplasty. This condition is a cause of discomfort for many patients. Saline nasal spray can be used to keep the inside of the nose moist, which should reduce discomfort for patients.

By following these tips and adhering to post-surgical care instructions, patients should be able to reduce pain so that the discomfort experienced following rhinoplasty surgery is minimal. These tips are also useful to patients recovering from septoplasty surgery, a procedure that reduces nasal blockage to correct breathing problems for patients.
