What Is Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)?
If you are unhappy with the shape or size of your nose, you may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty. You may also benefit from the procedure if you suffer from a congenital defect, such as a deviated septum. During this procedure, also known as nose reshaping surgery, Dr. Keyes can change the shape and/or size of your nose. Most frequently, he will eliminate excess cartilage and bone, but he can also perform bone or tissue grafting to restructure certain areas.
With rhinoplasty, Dr. Keyes can correct a range of aesthetic issues. These include:
- Wide or flared nostrils
- A hump or depression on the bridge of the nose
- A bulbous or upturned tip
- A crooked nose, due to a break or other facial trauma
- A disproportionately large or small nose
Dr. Keyes is also highly skilled at performing ethnic rhinoplasty. He can make many different enhancements while still maintaining your unique ethnic features and beauty.
Preparing for Rhinoplasty
Before your surgery, you will have a complete consultation with Dr. Keyes. He will determine your candidacy for rhinoplasty and create a treatment plan to address your particular goals. He will also answer any questions you may have, and he will take as much time as you need to feel confident about the procedure.
You will also meet with our anesthesiologist, who will provide complete pre-operative instructions. The night before your procedure, he or she will call you to review these guidelines. On the day of your surgery, you will first meet with your nurse. He or she will review your medical history and post-operative care. You will sign a consent form and discuss how the day will proceed. Dr. Keyes will also be available to answer any other questions you may have.
When you are ready for your surgery, your anesthesiologist will administer a mild oral sedative to help you relax. Then he or she will administer stronger IV anesthesia, which will put you to sleep throughout your treatment.
Dr. Keyes uses a variety of techniques to perform rhinoplasty. The type he uses for you will depend on your aesthetic goals and the natural structure of your nose. Whenever possible, he prefers to use closed rhinoplasty techniques. Using these methods, he will place the incisions inside your nostrils, virtually eliminating visible scarring.
Recovery and Results
After your surgery, you will wake up in a private recovery room, where a nurse will carefully monitor your initial progress. When the anesthesia has fully worn off, you will be discharged. You will not be able to drive home, so you should arrange for a ride home before your procedure. Dr. Keyes, as well as your anesthesiologist, will call you the night after your surgery. In this way, they can check on your progress and answer any questions you may have.
You will typically come in for a check-up the day after your rhinoplasty. You will have additional follow-ups at one week, two weeks, and at one, two, and three months. Dr. Keyes proudly provides complete post-operative care for life. You can schedule as many check-ups as you want at no additional charge.
Typically, you will be able to see some improvement in the shape of your nose immediately after your procedure. However, it is normal to experience some post-surgical swelling. This inflammation will subside, although it may take up to a year for your nose to settle completely into its new shape. After all, the swelling has dissipated, you will enjoy the final results. Dr. Keyes always provides subtle enhancements that augment your natural facial features.
