If you are dissatisfied with the size or shape of your natural breasts, or your bust has lost its youthful shape, you may be a candidate for breast augmentation. Additionally, candidates should have:
- Reached age 18 for saline implants, or 22 for silicone gel implants
- Good overall health
- Realistic expectations
Candidates should also be nonsmokers, or willing to quit for a period before and after surgery. When you initially meet with Dr. Keyes to discuss breast augmentation, he will fully evaluate your candidacy. If you are a good candidate, he can also explain your options for implant type, placement, and incision patterns at this time.
Risks and Benefits
Breast augmentation surgery is generally considered to be a safe and effective way to increase your satisfaction with your breasts. Benefits of breast augmentation include feeling more feminine and gaining self-confidence, or just feeling more like yourself. Many women who are considering breast augmentation look forward to having more clothing options and feeling more attractive in low-cut tops or beachwear.
Like any surgery, breast augmentation comes with some inherent risks. Possible complications include infection, bleeding, anesthesia risks, and changes in skin sensation. Post surgery, implants can rupture or form scar tissue around them, which could require breast surgery revision. You can increase your chance of satisfaction and minimize your risks by choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your breast augmentation.
The Surgical Procedure
Before you undergo surgery, you and Dr. Keyes will determine the specifics of your treatment plan. This includes elements like implant type (silicone or saline), placement (under or over the muscle), and incision site (varies depending on the type of implant and patient preference). On the day of the procedure, you will be prepped for surgery at our state-of-the-art facility and administered sedation by a board-certified anesthesiologist, who will carefully monitor you during your procedure.
Dr. Keyes will make the incision and create a pocket for your breast implant. His surgical skill and experience helps to ensure minimal scarring. If you are receiving saline implants, he will fill them after they are placed in the pockets. Silicone implants are pre-filled and may require a slightly larger incision. Next, Dr. Keyes will check for symmetry and make any changes necessary to achieve the ideal placement. He will then close the incisions and apply surgical dressings. You will wear a special contouring garment in the days following your procedure which will reduce swelling and promote healing. It is important to follow Dr. Keyes’ post-operative guidelines after surgery and during your recovery.
