Lower eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty or an eye lift, is a surgical procedure that removes underway bags to create a more attractive appearance. It can be performed in conjunction with upper eyelid surgery to freshen up your look.

The skin around the lower lids is very delicate and some people develop fatty deposits under the eyes because of genetics. Loose skin and bags under the eyes can make you look years older than your real age so this procedure helps to restore a more youthful appearance.

Dr. Geoffrey Keyes’ surgical techniques can help to:

  • Remove undereye bags
  • Improve your overall appearance
  • Give you a well-rested look
  • Restore natural contours of the eyes
  • Make your eyes appear larger and more youthful

Dr. Keyes is also highly skilled at performing upper eyelid surgery. He can perform both procedures during the same visit to further rejuvenate and restore your youthful appearance.

Dr. Keyes will perform a comprehensive evaluation during your consultation appointment to determine whether you are a good candidate for lower eyelid surgery. He will learn more about your goals and expectations. He will also take a closer look at the quality of your skin and the overall structure of the eyes to detriment what techniques would help create the best result. This is the time to get answers you have about the procedure and learn more about the surgery in detail.

Lower eyelid surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. You will be awake during the procedure but the entire eye area and upper face will be numb. Dr. Keyes will make very small incisions along the lower lash line and these will be very easy to hide. He can then access the fatty pockets and excess tissue around the eyes for easy removal.

Once the extra tissue has been removed, the incision will be closed with sutures and bandaged up. You will need to have someone drive you home after surgery so you can rest.

It’s best to keep your head elevated for several hours after surgery. You can manage pain and discomfort by taking over-the-counter medication and resting for a few days after surgery. We will check in via phone when you get home and make arrangements for your follow up visit.

Most patients come in for a check-up the day after surgery with additional follow-up visits a week and a few weeks later. If you think you need to see Dr. Keyes for a follow-up any time between those times, you can see him for no additional charge.

After lower eyelid surgery, most patients see a difference as soon as the bandages come off. There is some residual swelling from surgery but this typically subsides within a week or two. You can expect some swelling and bruising for up to a couple of weeks after surgery but will see ongoing results as the area continues to heal.
