Rhinoplasty Plastic Surgery
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose surgery or nose job, is one of the five most sought-after plastic surgeries performed in the US. In this procedure, the plastic surgeon will modify the cartilage and bone of the nose with precision to create the desired appearance.
Rhinoplasty provides a safe and efficient solution to women and men who may be displeased with the look of their nose. Double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey R. Keyes provides rhinoplasty to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Bakersfield, California, and surrounding locations.
The ideal candidate for rhinoplasty may:
- Have a nose that they feel is too large or small relative to other facial features
- Have nostrils that are too pinched or flared
- Have an off-center or crooked
- Have a nose that is asymmetrical due to an injury
- Have breathing issues due to internal nose irregularities
Types of Rhinoplasty
Some of the major types of rhinoplasty include:
Reduction rhinoplasty is effective for bumps on the bridge of the nose, a longer nasal tip, or nostrils that are too flared. The surgeon will remove minute amounts of bone or cartilage to create the desired outcome.
Augmentation rhinoplasty is a popular nose reshaping procedure. In this case, the surgeon will perform bone or tissue grafting to augment the nasal tip and/or bridge.
In case of trauma to the nose due to an injury, the patient can have post-traumatic rhinoplasty. Surgeons use this treatment to straighten the nose and correct a deviated nasal septum. Post-traumatic rhinoplasty patients may have suffered from a broken nose. In such instances, the surgeon may have to re-fracture the nose and set it again.
Patients may need reconstructive rhinoplasty, if they have lost all or a significant part of the nose due to an accident or cancer surgery. The surgeon will re-build the nose through skin grafts, flap techniques, and other sophisticated methods.
Ethnic rhinoplasty is typically performed on people of African American, Asian, Hispanic, Afro-Caribbean and Middle Eastern descent. These patients usually have softer nasal outlines, which require the surgeon to take special care to ensure that they preserve the distinctive features on the face.
Irrespective of the kind of rhinoplasty a patient needs, the surgeon will usually follow one of these two main techniques:
Closed rhinoplasty may be preferred wherever possible because all surgical incisions are placed inside the nose, which eliminates the risk of scarring. Though these incisions are discreet, the surgeon can still have access to a significant part of the nose to address various aesthetic concerns.
While open rhinoplasty provides the surgeon with more access to the cartilage and bone of the nose, it will leave some amount of scar tissue. Through placing an incision across the columella which is the area of cartilage situated between the two nostrils, the surgeon can lift the skin off the tip of the nose and shape the cartilage accurately.
